Celebrity guest appearances on Friends

During its ten-season run, Friends became a firm favourite with millions of viewers and attracted its fair share of celebrities who were keen to get a guest spot in an episode or two. Friendsical plays homage to these guest stars with some guest stars of its own. But who will they play? You’ll have to come along to find out.

In the meantime, let’s take a lookat some of the most memorable celebrity guest appearances on the Friends show.

Reese Witherspoon

Before she became an Oscar winner, Reese Witherspoon appeared in two Season 6 episodes as Rachel’s sister Jill. Jill turns up at the apartment having been cut off by their father, then breaks the sisterly code by trying to date Ross.

George Clooney and Noah Wyle

Clooney shot to fame in E.R., and makes a cameo in the two-part Season 1 episode where Rachel and Monica switch identities so that Rachel can use Monica’s medical insurance. Alongside fellow E.R. cast member Noah Wyle, Clooney appears as a dreamy doctor and the pair agree to go on a date with Rachel and Monica.

Billy Crystal and Robin Williams

In a crowded Central Perk, Billy Crystal and Robin Williams appear as two customers who ask the friends to shuffle up on the sofa so they can sit down. There follows an emotive conversation, which the friends can’t help overhearing. Crystal reveals he’s been sleeping with Williams’ wife before the pair exit dramatically.

Winona Ryder

Season 7 sees Winona Ryder make an appearance as Melissa Warburton. A friend of Rachel’s from college, they kissed after drinking too much one night. Rachel’s disappointed to hear that Melissa doesn’t remember the incident, and kisses her again to prove to Phoebe that it happened. Melissa then admits she had remembered, and confesses her love for Rachel.

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt offers up a spectacular performance as Will Colbert in Season 8’s The One With the Rumour. Will went to high school with Ross, Monica and Rachel, and reveals that he was the third memberof the ‘I Hate Rachel Green’ Club – alongside Ross and exchange student, Ta-Taka-Ki-Kek.They spread a rumour that Rachel had both male and female reproductive organs.

Gary Oldman

In Season 7, Joey lands a role in a movie where he plays a WWII soldier. Oldman’s character is playing opposite him, but has an unfortunate habit of spitting when he talks. When Joey pulls him up on it, he declares that, “When you enunciate, you spit!” Joey ends up mimicking the habit, and when the scene cuts, both have to stop to wipe spit from their eyes.

Jeff Goldblum

The Season 9 episode, The One With the Mugging, features Jeff Goldblum as legendary director Leonard Hayes. Joey does the audition with a full bladder, leading him to ace the audition because of his tortured disposition. He tries to make a quick exit when Hayes informs him he’s got the part, but ends up disgracing himself when he’s pulled into a hug by the director.
